Good afternoon.
If we divide the universe into heaven and earth, we can describe life as the interplay between the two. As spiritual beings, we are of the realm of heaven. But we are playing here together in the world, so life is heaven dancing with earth.
The person or spirit with no body is only a ghost. The body without the person or spirit is also not fully alive. Detachment of person and body produces sleep, then coma, in which the body functions pysically, but is not fully alive. Complete detachment of the person [spirit or heaven aspect] from the body [earth realm] produces death.
We can further divide each realm. Heaven or personality can be divided into person and mind, or thinker and thought. Earth or the physical can be divided into energy and matter. Although they cannot be actually separated, it is useful to THINK of them as separate.
As healers, we wish to help each other improve our health or existence in all areas [spirit, mind, energy and physical] by understanding what is, and changing it to what we imagine will be better. We use any aspect of ourselves or the universe for this purpose. We desire the patients improvement and pray for them. We discuss with them their thoughts, ideas, desires, conclusions and plans. We treat their physical bodies with physical energy of various kinds [electrical, magnetic, etc] We do physical manipulation, and administer physical substances [food, drugs, herbs, etc.].
In the largest sense of the word, everything that exists is Qi in some form: spiritual Qi [the person or entity], mental Qi [the mind or thoughts], physical-energy Qi [the various forms of electro-magnetic energy], or physical-material Qi [the condensed energy that forms the "solid" aspect of the pysical universe.
In the healing arts, we tend of think of "Qi" in the limited sense of electro-magnetic movement within the physical body. This certainly is Qi, but it is only one of the four realms or forms of Qi.
The greatest benefit for the patient is produced by changing the area of greatest imbalance. Each person's situation and needs are diffferent and constantly changing, so there is no standard treatment what will work on everyone at all times. Each therapy must be continuously redesigned for each patient.
A single therapy session may very well include discussion of the patients life and how to improve it, prayers to the spiriti realm for assistance, massage or manipulation of the body which transfers electrical energy and physically alters tissue or structure, herbs or medicines, and advice on diet and exercise. All thse orms of help have been continusously used for thousands of years, and will not stop.
In addition, we also have a number of mechanical instruments to use. The oldest of these is the acupuncture needle, which functions in several ways. It mechanically stimulates and puts attention on a particular spot. And because it is a conductive antenna, it absorbs electro-magnetic energy from the universe, and delivers it where ever it is inserted, exactly as a radio antenna captures electrical-Qi energy and delivers it to your radio. For thousands of years, the major electro-mechanical instruments for treatment were the human hand and the acupuncture needle.
In the last 20 years or so, our understanding of the electrical and mechanical aspects of the universe has increased enormously. This has resulted in the creation of a large number of instruments that measure and influence the electrical nature of the body. For approximately 100 years now, men and designed and used specialized equipment to help us understand and alter the electrical nature of the body.
We now have sophistical electrical test instruments to measure the voltage potential at any point on the body. This allows us to more accurately map the position and strength of the energy-flow paths within the body. We also have a large number of instruments that put electro-magnetic energy into the body in various forms, strengths and frequencies.
The original acupuncture needle is both the generator of electrical qi [by passive reception from surrounding fields] and the delivery system [by insertion in the appropriate point]. Since we can now generate electro-magnetic force to our specification, we are no longer limited to passive reception by the needle.
The needle is still useful in its original form, and still useful as a delivery instrument for other generators of electrical-qi energy. These can be as simple as an ordinary battery, which increases the effectiveness of acupuncture greatly, or as sophisticated as we desire.
We are no longer limited to the implanted needle, however, since we can deliver electrical energy by skin contact without penetration. In addition, there are useful forms of energy, such as magnetism, which the needle cannot deliver. The needle is still useful, but it is now only one of many tools.
We can expect there will be many more machines to help us understand and treat the patient. Because most official "modern-scientific" research has focussed on the chemical-mechanical nature of the body and denied its electrical nature [in spite of the fact that the Chinese have had remarkably detailed and accurate electrical maps of the body for about 4000 years] our understanding of bio-energy has lagged behind our understand of bio-mechanics and bio-chemistry.
We can therefore expect powerful innovations in the energy areas. Just as we have a machine [the NMR or Nuclear Magnetic Resonance scanner] wich makes a three dimensional map of the entire physical body showing all tissues, so we can expect to have a machine that will map the entire three dimensional electrical flow paths of the body. There is no fundamental reason why the therapist of the future can not have a continuous real-time 3-dimensional holographic picture of the patient's electo-magnetic flows.
And as we can now administer electrical treatment to the body without needles, in the future we will be able to induce electrial currents deep with the body without external contact.
These new instrument of the future will greatly expand our understanding of the the electro-magnetic aspects of our bodies, and our relationship to the enire universe.

I am fascinated by Dr. Nakagawa's {The founder of the Shin-Atsu-Shin Acupuncture Clinic} observation that the number of tsubo {acupuncture} points increases with age and ill health. This immediately suggests many questions for further research. Are the Tsubo {treatment} points areas of energy leakage from the body? Are they a CAUSE of ill health, aging, and death? Can we measure the health of the patient by the number and electrical "size" of the holes? Can we measure or compute the total electrical energy of the body? Can we plot this total charge over time and predict the life expectancy of the patient, much as we can observe a discharging battery and predict when it will expire?
If the holes do not represent energy leakage, then what are they? If they do represent leakage, how do we think about it? Are they like holes in a net, through which fish may escape? Are they like cross-sections of pipes out of the physical aspect of the body? If so, where do the pipes go? Do they curve back around to re-enter the body? Are they generation points of the aura? Are they pipelines or paths of communication to other people or places? If so, what kind of energy flows through them?
I am also fascinated by Dr. Nakagawa's observation that the holes move. This suggests more questions. If there a rhythm or pattern to the number, strength and location of the holes? How do the holes relate to various brain wave patterns? How do they change during sleep, waking, meditation? How are they affected by sexual activity and orgasm? Do they change significantly at weaning, puberty, pregnancy, birth, or menopause?

Exploring these and other questions will increase our understanding, and this will give us new options in activity and behavior.
I think the greatest benefit computers have given us is an understanding of our minds as computers, showing us how we continusouly rewrite our own personal operating systems, and allowing us to upgrade our personal programming to our own specifications. The most sophisticated, flexible and powerful "mechanical device" we know of is the human body. As we learn from computers how our minds work, so we should be able to learn from machines aspects of how our bodies work. Dr. Nakagawa is developing machines to duplicate elements of what his father {a well known Qi healer} could do with his hands. In the future, perhaps Qi healers will use learning machines to help them develp their abilities to manipulte Qi energy.
I hope I have made some obervations that are useful to you and suggested some interesting possibilities for our future dance of life.

The late Masato Nakagwa, ph.D., Doctor of Oriental Medicine, was born in 1936 in Hokkaido, Japan, died 1995. In addition to his position as the Chairman of Shin-Atsu-Shin Clinic,Inc. and the SAS International Ki Science Association, Dr. Nakagawa held important positions in many U.S., Chinese, Russian and other international Kigong associations and Ki research organs.
